Employer workforce development

Employer Environmental & Sustainability Development Pathway

Build environmental capability across your organisation with a role-based pathway from foundation knowledge to applied management, strategic leadership and continuing professional development.

The core principle

Develop people for the responsibility they carry

Environmental capability rarely sits in one job title. Supervisors, H&S teams, Facilities, Operations, Compliance, specialists and senior leaders need different depths of knowledge and responsibility.

Map development to each employee’s role, existing competence, evidence and organisational need — not simply to job title or seniority.
The employer pathway

Seven steps from role mapping to maintained competence

1. MAP ROLESIdentify who holds environmental and sustainability responsibility.
2. ASSESSReview knowledge, experience, duties and available evidence.
3. BUILD FOUNDATIONSUse Level 3 where structured introductory learning is appropriate.
4. APPLYGive supported practical responsibility and opportunities to learn.
5. DEVELOP PRACTICEUse Level 6 where role and work evidence support applied management.
6. DEVELOP LEADERSHIPUse Level 7 for genuine strategic environmental responsibility.
7. MAINTAINEmbed CPD, quality assurance and professional review.
Four starting points

Choose the route from current capability

NEW RESPONSIBILITY

Foundation development

Level 3 e-learning can build structured environmental-management knowledge for employees beginning their development.

TRANSFERABLE SKILLS

H&S, Facilities or Compliance

Build specialist environmental knowledge around existing risk, systems, estates or compliance experience.

EXISTING PRACTITIONER

Applied management

A suitability review may support direct Level 6 entry where role and evidence are sufficient.

STRATEGIC LEADER

Advanced development

A suitability review may support Level 7 where genuine strategic responsibility and evidence exist.

Employees do not have to progress Level 3 → Level 6 → Level 7. Higher-level entry can be appropriate after a suitability review, but responsibility and evidence still matter.
Practical development

Turn learning into organisational capability

Give developing employees progressively greater responsibility with review and mentoring. The purpose is to build judgement and evidence, not simply add more tasks.

Systems and compliance

  • Maintain aspects and impacts information
  • Support legal and compliance reviews
  • Participate in internal audits
  • Support EMS activity

Data and improvement

  • Monitor waste, water, energy or emissions
  • Draft objectives and action plans
  • Support carbon-reduction projects
  • Prepare environmental reports

Risk and delivery

  • Investigate environmental incidents
  • Work with suppliers and contractors
  • Apply operational controls
  • Escalate beyond internal competence
Competence management

Build a competence matrix, not just a training list

Track each employee’s role, qualification, environmental responsibilities, activity coverage, available evidence, development level, CPD, professional recognition, next action and review date.

Use it to allocate responsibility

Identify who can lead an internal audit, own environmental data or support a new sustainability programme — and who needs supervision first.

Use it to plan development

Connect qualifications, workplace exposure, mentoring and CPD to the organisation’s real operational and strategic needs.

Support and assurance

Mentor, review and know when to refer

Mentoring

Use evidence reviews, case discussions, audit shadowing, report feedback, project debriefs and CPD planning.

Internal quality assurance

Use proportionate peer review, document control, data checks, standard templates, audit schedules and escalation rules.

External specialists

Refer complex permitting, legal, ecology, emissions, carbon assurance or other work beyond internal competence.

A competent internal environmental professional recognises professional boundaries. Referral is a strength, not a failure.
Professional development

Keep recognition and competence current

Professional membership and registration

Qualifications can support development, but ISEP membership, REnvP, CEnv and MCIOB are separate achievements assessed against the relevant body’s current requirements.

Employer CPD framework

Plan role-relevant CPD across legislation, management systems, climate and energy, resources, auditing, reporting, environmental data, sector risk and leadership.

Frequently asked questions

Employer environmental development

Should every employee start at Level 3?

No. Level 3 is a foundation e-learning route. Experienced practitioners may be more suited to Level 6 following a suitability and evidence review.

Should everyone progress to Level 7?

No. Level 7 is strategic development and should reflect genuine organisational responsibility and suitable evidence.

Does Level 6 require workplace evidence?

Yes. The qualification includes competency-based outcomes, and SHEC Learning® requires learners to be in a suitable role to provide work-based evidence.

Does Level 7 require workplace evidence?

Yes. SHEC Learning® treats Level 7 as a vocational qualification requiring a suitable role and work-based evidence.

Can H&S staff become environmental professionals?

Potentially. Their risk, legal and management-system skills can transfer, but specialist environmental competence still needs to be developed.

Does Level 7 automatically give CEnv or MCIOB?

No. Professional membership and registration are assessed separately against the relevant body’s current requirements.

How should employers measure success?

Look beyond completion to environmental performance, stronger evidence, decision quality, audit quality, reduced risk and increased organisational capability.

What should employers check before enrolment?

Confirm the current role, future responsibility, appropriate level, access to evidence, workplace support, mentoring and the intended commercial and operational outcomes.
