Environmental management qualifications compared

Which Environmental Management Qualification Is Right for Me?

Choose by your current role, responsibility, experience and evidence—not simply by selecting the highest available level.

Quick decision rule

Three regulated ProQual routes for three different stages

Level 3 builds foundation knowledge. Level 6 develops practitioner and management capability. Level 7 advances strategic environmental leadership.

The right level reflects the work you do now and the responsibility you are ready to evidence.

Assessment

The levels are assessed very differently

The qualifications are not three versions of the same course. Their scale, evidence expectations and professional context increase substantially.

Level 3

ProQual structures the qualification as one internally assessed unit. SHEC Learning® currently delivers the assessment through a 60-question multiple-choice examination with 90 minutes available.

Level 6

Portfolio assessed with knowledge and competency outcomes. Evidence may include written work, professional discussion, organisational documents, observation, media, witness evidence and reflection.

Level 7

Portfolio assessed with a stronger strategic and applied focus. Several units require practical or competency evidence—not written assignments alone.

Progression questions

Do I have to complete each level in order?

Level 3 before Level 6?

No formal Level 3 prerequisite is specified by ProQual. An experienced practitioner may be suitable for Level 6 if their role, knowledge and evidence meet the assessment demands.

Level 6 before Level 7?

Not as a simple mandatory ladder. Level 7 still requires an appropriate strategic professional context, senior responsibility and access to suitable evidence.

Who can apply?

Job title alone does not determine suitability

Health and safety, facilities, construction, compliance and operations professionals may all have relevant transferable skills. The deciding factor is the environmental responsibility within the role.

New to environmental responsibility: consider Level 3
Substantial management responsibility: consider Level 6
Senior strategic responsibility: consider Level 7

Professional recognition

Qualification does not equal professional status

Qualifications support development

They confirm assessed achievement at a defined RQF level and can strengthen a wider professional pathway.

Membership and registration are separate

ISEP membership, REnvP, CEnv and MCIOB each have their own eligibility and assessment requirements.

No SHEC Learning® qualification automatically awards professional membership, REnvP, CEnv or MCIOB.

Which level is best for an Environmental Manager?

That depends on actual responsibility. Level 6 may suit practitioner and management roles; Level 7 is aimed at more strategic leadership.
