Many of us spend a significant portion of our day sitting at a desk, whether for work or leisure. However, prolonged sitting in an improper posture can lead to various health issues, including back pain, neck strain, and repetitive strain injuries. Therefore, creating an ergonomic desk setup is not just a luxury, but a necessity for maintaining comfort, promoting long-term health, and enhancing productivity and efficiency. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) emphasise ergonomic principles to prevent musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) in the workplace, offering recommendations that include proper desk ergonomics to mitigate these risks effectively. Creating a comfortable and efficient workspace is crucial for your health and productivity. From my expert point of view, ensuring a well-designed desk setup is vital for anyone who spends significant time at a desk, whether for work or leisure. Many of us underestimate the impact of our workspace on our health and productivity. Prolonged sitting in an improper posture can lead to discomfort and long-term health issues like back pain, neck strain, and repetitive strain injuries. Investing in an ergonomic desk setup isn't just about comfort; it's about safeguarding your health and enhancing your overall well-being. Here are ten essential ergonomic improvements you can make to your desk setup:
Invest in an adjustable desk and ergonomic chair tailored to your height and preferred sitting posture. A height-adjustable desk allows you to alternate between sitting and standing throughout the day, promoting better circulation and reducing the risk of musculoskeletal disorders.
Position your monitor directly in front of you at arm's length, with the top of the screen at or slightly below eye level. This helps maintain a neutral neck position and reduces strain on your eyes and upper body.
Keep your keyboard and mouse close to your body and at the same level. Your elbows should be bent at approximately 90 degrees when typing or using the mouse, with your wrists in a neutral position to minimise strain.
Ensure your ergonomic chair provides adequate lumbar support to maintain the natural curve of your spine. Adjust the chair's height so that your feet rest flat on the floor or a footrest, with your knees at a 90-degree angle.
Consider using ergonomic accessories such as a padded wrist rest for your keyboard and mouse to support your wrists and reduce the risk of carpal tunnel syndrome. A document holder can also help position papers at eye level and prevent neck strain.
Maintain a clutter-free desk by organising frequently used items within arm's reach. This minimises repetitive reaching and twisting motions that strain your muscles over time.
Ensure your workspace is well-lit to reduce eye strain. Position your desk lamp to illuminate documents without causing glare on your computer screen. Natural light is ideal, so position your desk near a window.
Use a footrest if your feet do not comfortably reach the floor when sitting. This helps improve circulation and reduce pressure on the backs of your thighs.
Even with the most ergonomic setup, prolonged sitting can still harm your health. Take regular breaks to stand, stretch, and move around every hour. Consider using a reminder or timer to prompt you to take breaks throughout the day.
Maintain good posture throughout the day by sitting up straight with your shoulders relaxed and your ears aligned with your shoulders. Avoid slouching or leaning forward, as this can strain your spine and lead to discomfort.
From my experience, implementing these ten essential ergonomic improvements can significantly improve your daily comfort and productivity. By prioritising your health and well-being through a well-designed desk setup, you not only prevent potential health issues but also enhance your efficiency and enjoyment of your workspace. It's essential to remember that your desk setup should be flexible, adapting to your needs throughout the day to promote proper posture and minimise the risk of strain or injury. A well-adjusted workspace creates a foundation for long-term success and wellness.

Becoming a fire risk assessor requires more than learning how to complete a form. Professional competence develops through fire-safety knowledge, appropriate qualifications, practical experience, professional judgement, accurate reporting, continuing professional development and working within the limits of your competence.
There is no single route for everyone. Your right starting point depends on what you can already demonstrate.
Your existing knowledge and experience determine where development should begin. General Health & Safety experience is valuable, but it does not automatically prove occupational fire-risk-assessment competence.
Build a Foundation-level understanding before progressing into supervised assessment activity and real building experience.
Use transferable risk skills while developing specific fire-safety knowledge, building understanding and practical FRA experience.
Develop specialist competence around the premises, occupants, management systems and fire precautions you work with.
Map current evidence against modern competence expectations, identify genuine gaps and progress at the appropriate level.
Foundation development for people building specific fire-risk-assessment knowledge.
Intermediate development with substantially more practical competence and professional reporting.
The government has committed to introducing mandatory independent certification for fire risk assessors in England. The consultation closed on 18 June 2026. As of September 2026, the final framework and implementation arrangements have not yet been brought into force.
This means fire risk assessment is not currently a regulated profession with mandatory certification, although assessors must still be competent for the work they undertake and duty holders must ensure assessments are suitable and sufficient.
This section should be reviewed when government proposals or legislation change.
Structured learning and assessment against defined outcomes, awarded by a regulated awarding organisation.
Independent verification of competence against the rules and standards of a certification scheme.
Recognition through a professional register or body, normally subject to competence, conduct and CPD requirements.
Completing a SHEC qualification does not automatically provide certification, professional registration or unrestricted competence.
✓ Observe experienced and competent assessors.
✓ Begin with simpler, lower-risk premises.
✓ Complete supervised assessment activity.
✓ Receive feedback on findings and reports.
✓ Build evidence across different premises and scenarios.
✓ Develop knowledge of construction and fire protection.
✓ Increase complexity gradually.
✓ Refer work beyond your competence to specialists.
No single degree route is required. You need relevant knowledge, training, experience and other qualities appropriate to the work you undertake.
Yes, but general H&S experience alone is not enough. You must develop fire-specific knowledge and supervised practical experience.
Yes. Facilities and property experience can be a strong starting point, provided fire-specific competence is developed and evidenced.
Potentially. Current ProQual entry permits the Level 3 Award or at least three years’ proven occupational fire-risk-assessment experience, subject to suitability assessment.
Knowledge can be developed online, but professional competence also requires practical experience, assessment activity and evidence that cannot be replaced by online study alone.
There is no universal timescale. It depends on your starting knowledge, access to practical experience, qualification route and the scope of work you intend to undertake.
It is a framework describing competence for individual fire risk assessors at Foundation, Intermediate and Advanced levels. It is not itself a qualification or a step-by-step assessment method.
No. Competence must always be matched to the premises, risks and complexity of the assessment.
Tell SHEC about your background, experience and intended role. We will help you identify the development route that matches what you can already demonstrate.
