What is the Construction Skills Certification Scheme?

The Construction Skills Certification Scheme or CSCS is the leading skills certification scheme which operates within the UK construction industry.

If you work in the UK construction industry, chances are you’ve heard of the Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS). But what exactly is it — and why is it so important?

Whether you're a site labourer, skilled tradesperson, or aspiring site manager, a CSCS card helps prove your competence, qualifications, and commitment to health and safety on site.

What Is a CSCS Card?

The CSCS card is a form of identification that confirms a construction worker’s skills, training, and qualifications. It helps employers ensure that everyone on site meets a recognised standard, contributing to a safer and more professional working environment.

Although holding a CSCS card is not a legal requirement, most principal contractors, developers, and site managers now require workers and subcontractors to have one before stepping onto a job site. In this way, the CSCS scheme has become a de facto industry standard.
