Which ELCAS course is right for me?

The right course is the one that supports your next role and has assessment requirements you can meet. Your rank or length of service alone does not determine the qualification level. Consider what you actually do, the knowledge you need to develop and the evidence you can provide.

Changing career direction

A knowledge-based qualification can help you establish a foundation in a new subject. Check the assessment method and any entry requirements before deciding.

Recognising work you already do

An NVQ may suit you if your current responsibilities match its occupational requirements. You will need genuine workplace evidence, rather than online study alone.

Developing specialist or senior practice

Look at the scope of the qualification and your intended responsibilities. A higher level should reflect the work and learning required, not simply the funding available.

Explore all five subject groups

Use these starting points to narrow your options, then compare the individual approved courses in our ELCAS directory.

Health and safety

Consider this pathway if you want to develop safety knowledge or build on responsibilities for managing workplace risk. The directory includes a Level 3 IOSH Certificate, occupational health and safety NVQs at Levels 3 and 6, and a Level 7 strategic health and safety qualification.

Discuss whether you need structured knowledge development or already have access to appropriate occupational evidence.

Construction

Explore supervision, site management, contracting operations, senior site inspection and senior management routes. Match the qualification to your actual construction responsibilities and the work you can evidence.

Military leadership experience can be relevant, but construction NVQs require evidence that meets the specific occupational standards.

Fire risk assessment

The Level 3 Award develops knowledge of fire risk assessment. The Level 4 Certificate combines knowledge with practical competence requirements.

Choose according to your starting point and access to relevant assessment activity. The Level 3 knowledge qualification does not, by itself, demonstrate occupational competence.

Environmental management

Explore environmental management and sustainability, from a Level 3 foundation to Level 6 and Level 7 study. This may interest you if your intended work involves environmental performance, resource management or organisational improvement.

Ask how each course is assessed and what knowledge or practical context it expects.

Teaching, assessment and quality assurance

Build on an interest in developing others through education and training, workplace assessment or quality assurance. The approved directory includes teaching, assessing competence, internal quality assurance and understanding external quality assurance routes.

Requirements differ: some routes need access to learners, teaching practice or assessment activity. A knowledge-only award has a different purpose from a competence qualification.

Can military experience support an NVQ?

Relevant military work may help demonstrate competence where it matches the qualification requirements. An assessor needs to review the activities, your responsibility and the evidence available. Holding a rank, completing a military course or having years of service does not automatically satisfy an NVQ.

Prepare a brief description of your duties and examples of work you are authorised to share. Discuss suitability before sending documents. Do not send classified, operationally sensitive or third-party personal information with an initial enquiry.

Check access before enrolling. If you no longer carry out the relevant work, or cannot provide suitable evidence, ask whether a knowledge-based route or a later start would better fit your circumstances.

What to tell us when you enquire

  1. Your career aim: the role or sector you want to move into.
  2. Your current responsibilities: a short, non-sensitive description of the work you do.
  3. Your qualifications and experience: relevant study and practical responsibilities.
  4. Your access to practical activity: workplace evidence, learners, teaching or assessment opportunities where relevant.
  5. Your preferred timing: when you hope to start and how study will fit around work or resettlement.

We can then discuss a suitable course, its assessment requirements and the details needed for your funding enquiry. Your Education Staff or Single Service Representative confirms your ELC entitlement and claim requirements.

Questions service leavers often ask

Do I need to start at Level 3?

Not necessarily. Your starting point depends on the course requirements, existing knowledge, responsibilities and evidence. Ask for a suitability review before choosing a higher-level route.

Can I complete an NVQ through online study alone?

No. Online portfolio support does not replace the occupational activity and genuine workplace evidence required by an NVQ.

Does provider approval cover every course on the website?

No. ELC funding applies to specific approved courses. Use our ELCAS directory and confirm the exact qualification, course code and fee with us before submitting your claim.

Should I enrol before my funding is authorised?

Agree course details with SHEC first and follow the official claim process. Receive your Claim Authorisation Note before starting and complete the payment and enrolment arrangements agreed with us.
